Project:: Wooden deck connected to house. Evidence of rot and ant damage is showing, but the extent of damage is not known.

Existing deck has been removed to expose the depth of the rot and ant damage - from the wall down into the plate and box joist.

This photo also shows the old concrete stairs under the deck. These stairs will have to be dismatled with a jack hammer. Masonry against wood is a no-no! It provides an easy way in for ants.

Here the siding and sub-siding has been removed above the wall and below the shoe to expose deeper damage.

Please note that the cement steps have been removed.

Here, the band joist has been removed. This shows where the damage has stopped. We do not need to go deeper in the removal process.

Here the band joist has been replaced and the sub-siding also replaced - both with new materials.

Tar paper and flashing have been installed. These two items were not included in the original construction.

The tar paper provides a wind and water barrier to protect the underlying wood products from the elements.

The Flashing channels any moisture / water downward and provides an invincible barrier against future penetration of "critters"

New siding has been installed. The deck surface has been rebuilt, re-using the old boards whenever possible. Where new decking was needed, matching wood is installed.

New paint and finish work has been completed. The area is now in better-than-new condition.

The same problem will not happen again!

Not shown: interim supports to existing deck and building during the renovations; new supports to the deck and building prior to completion. Supports protect against cracks and settling.
