ABOUT CLI

The Community Leadership Institute of Cape Cod and the Islands is associated with the National Association for Community Leadership. CLI is in its seventh year on Cape Cod.

The mission of CLI is to foster the growth of existing and potential community leaders on Cape Cod and the Islands.

CLI accomplishes their mission via:

  • The Leadership: Cape Cod Program,
  • Promoting continuing involvement of Program Alumni,
  • Facilitating the networking of alumni, participants, and others to solve community problems.

LEADERSHIP: CAPE COD

This program is presented once a year, from January to May. Participants are exposed to various aspects of Cape Cod, from government to health care, from the environment to the economy, and geographically from the Canal to Nauset to Race Point. A key component of this exposure is the introduction to, and interaction with, Community Leaders who are significantly involved with the issues.

Past sessions have included the County Court House - both the juvenile and the adult courts; the scientific community in Woods Hole; the Steamship Authority; the Community College.

COMMUNITY ORIENTED PROJECTS

In addition to classroom lectures at various on-site locations around the Cape, the classes are divided into smaller groups that prepare a Community Oriented Project. Each project group meets independently of the main class and develops research and presentation skills, in addition to the skills needed to work in diverse groups.

Past projects have included the establishment of a community roundtable on domestic violence, a local media access guide, the development of an "After Care" program for probationers of the Barnstable First District Court, and the rehabilitation of the Gingerbread House for the Cape Cod Child Development Center.

CANDIDATES

Candidates are invited to apply for the next Leadership: Cape Cod Program that will begin in January 1998. Interviews are normally held in October. Class size is limited and candidates not selected for the current session may ask to remain on the waiting list if desired.

ALUMNI

CLI graduates include representatives of the business community, service agencies, town government, medical / legal / accounting professionals and retirees from all areas of the Cape. CLI encourages its alumni to become and/or continue active involvement in Community Affairs.

NETWORKING

CLI also contributes to improved Community Leadership by providing a fertile environment in which graduates can network with each other and with other Community Leaders to facilitate better resolution of community problems on Cape Cod and the Islands.

FUNDING

Approximately 75% of the CLI budget is covered by tuition fees for the Program. The balance is raised from the community.

Of course, in addition to the tuition and funds raised from the community, employers of the participants contribute the time it takes to complete the Leadership: Cape Cod Program. This is a considerable investment in the community by responsible Cape Cod enterprises.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The strategic direction and business management of CLI, as well as the tactical implementation is provided by the Board of Directors.

CLI has a "working board". In addition to committee assignments for general management of the organization, more than half of the 21 Directors actually implement the Leadership: Cape Cod Program.

Each year around a dozen individual sessions are organized for the Program. Between one and three Directors are directly responsible for each individual session, supporting the topic with presenters, sponsors, a location, and all logistical issues. This is very time consuming, but also very rewarding.

Directors are nominated for their standing in the community, for their dedication to the community, and, just as important, for the skills and expertise they bring to the Program. Their dedication to the growth of the Cape and Islands community, via the development of existing and potential leaders, is clearly demonstrated through their commitment to the Leadership: Cape Cod Program.

Just as with the Program Participants, a good cross-section of the community is represented on the Board of Directors, including state and local government, healthcare and human services, education, finance and banking, retail and commercial business, entrepreneurs and industry executives.

The current Board consists of:
